A winter notebook

A thin notebook by the kettle records the season better than any app: first frosts, soup successes, and the days the yoga felt easy.

Keep it trivial

One line a day is enough: the weather, the soup, the walk. Trivial entries are the ones that continue, and the ones that continue become a record.

Note the practice honestly, including the skipped evenings. A notebook that only records success becomes a performance and stops being used by January.

Reread it in February

The notebook’s value arrives in deep winter, when the entries from November show how much light has actually returned. Seasonal morale is a data problem wearing a mood’s clothing.

Keep the notebook through spring, then start a fresh one. The completed volume joins the shelf as evidence that the season was lived deliberately, which is all any journal can honestly claim.
