Light in the window

A lamp in the window is a small act of winter citizenship. It costs little, changes the street, and returns to you after dark.

Place one warm lamp

A single warm-toned lamp on the windowsill, lit from dusk, gives the room an evening centre and the street a point of friendliness. Choose the bulb for warmth rather than brightness; winter evenings need embers, not noon.

Sit near it for the closing minutes of the day. The yoga sequence’s final sit, the tea, and the lamp belong together, and their combination is the journal’s entire thesis in one corner of a room.

Notice other windows

On the evening walk, note which windows carry warm light. The observation costs nothing and quietly reorganises the street from a dark corridor into a neighbourhood of small fires.

Return the courtesy tomorrow by lighting yours first. Light in a window is the most exchangeable form of winter comfort, and the exchange rate is excellent.
