The warmth of routine

Routine is winter’s central heating. Repeated small habits generate more usable warmth than any single grand plan.

Fix three anchors

Choose three fixed points, such as the morning stretch, the afternoon walk, and the evening tea, and let the rest of the day move around them. Anchors reduce the number of decisions a cold morning has to make.

Keep each anchor under fifteen minutes. Short anchors survive bad days, and survival is the metric that matters in February, not optimality.

Let the routine be boring

A routine that impresses is a routine that gets abandoned. The evening yoga sequence that looks identical every night is working precisely because nothing in it needs deciding.

Review the anchors monthly, keep what held, and replace what silently stopped. The routine serves the season and will rightly change in spring, which is not a failure but a thaw.
